Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms, died on September 8, 2022 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, at the age of 96. Elizabeth's reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch.

A 96-gun salute was fired by Australia’s Federation Guard on the forecourt of Parliament House in Canberra on September 9 to mark the passing of the Queen of Australia.

Monuments and landmarks across the country were lit up to honour the Queen. The Sydney Opera House was illuminated with an image of Queen Elizabeth II on the nights of September 9 & 10, as a symbolic gesture on behalf of the Government of New South Wales

The Australian Parliament House was lit up with images of the Queen throughout her seven-decade reign, reflecting her long and deep relationship with Australia.

Landmarks across Perth and Melbourne were illuminated in “royal purple” in honour of the Queen.

A national memorial service for the Queen took place on September 22 at Parliament House in Canberra.

A National Day of Mourning was observed as a “one-off public holiday“. One minute’s silence was observed at 11:00 across Australia.
