MURRINDINDI SHIRE COUNCIL, VIC. — A $40,000 grangt has been secured from the Federal Government for Murrindindi Shire Council to prepare a Heritage Management Plan for the Yea Flora Fossil Site.

The site, on Limestone Rd, just north of the Goulburn Valley Hwy, is listed on the National Heritage List.

It is said to offer a scientific understanding of how and when plants evolved.

Discovered in 1875, it is said to show traces of the first vascular plants that appeared around 415 million years ago, long before dinosaurs walked the Earth.

The site is noted as being of international significance. It narrowly escaped destruction by a Yea Shire team in the early 1990s.

“Our region has a rich past, and these sites help us understand that history. Protecting them will mean preserving shared stories and strengthening local connection,” Indi MHR Helen Haines said.
