Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) crews responded to a monitored alarm (fire indicator panel/FIP) activation at the Waterdale Road Recycling Centre, Bellfield this afternoon.
Firefighters arrived on the scene within three minutes to find smoke and flames issuing from two separate fires in the processing plant.
Crews donned breathing apparatus and began attacking both fires, however, this was proving difficult due to access issues, so the response was escalated to a second-alarm fire.
Two aerial appliances were required to help access difficult fires.
Both fires were contained this afternoon.
FRV remains on the scene to ensure the fires are fully extinguished.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
The fires will be investigated by FRV specialists.
