More than a dozen diners and staff escaped injury following an explosion at a Bonbeach restaurant last night.

Firefighters were called to the Nepean Highway at 6pm Wednesday, July 9, after callers to triple-zero (000) reported a kitchen explosion.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) crews from Springvale and Patterson River arrived on scene within five minutes to find the force of the explosion had blown the internal kitchen doors and front windows out.

It also caused damage to the sprinkler head, resulting in flooding.

Thankfully, the chef had left the kitchen seconds before the explosion occurred.

Approximately 10 diners were evacuated, as were approximately 20 residents living in apartments on the level above the restaurant.

FRV crews, supported by CFA, isolated power, gas supplies and the sprinkler system.

The incident was deemed under control at 6.12pm.

WorkSafe was notified.
