Maribyrnong detectives are appealing for public assistance to uncover information following two significant fires at a factory in Footscray last year.

Emergency services were called to the initial blaze at an abandoned factory on Ballarat Road in Footscray on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 about 7.45pm.

The fire caused significant damage to the building, and an emergency order was subsequently issued by the council to demolish the impacted areas.

Only two days later, on 2 August, another fire broke out at the same factory about 2pm.

Maribyrnong Crime Investigation Unit detectives believe an unknown offender set a pile of rubbish alight inside the building, which engulfed a large section of the premises.

Detectives received an anonymous tip in September 2024 that vision was shared on social media of an unknown person lighting the fire during the initial incident on July 31, but despite making extensive enquiries and scouring social media, they have been unable to locate the footage.

Investigators have not been able to confirm whether the two fires are linked and are urging anyone with information about the incidents or the social media vision to come forward.
