Emergency services responded to a single-vehicle collision in Wantirna South this afternoon.

Police understand a vehicle, driven by a 91-year-old woman, has lost control on Coleman Road around 12.20pm, struck three pedestrians before driving through a fence and hitting people sitting on a park bench.

A pedestrian died at the scene.

A second person was transported to hospital in a critical condition, whilst a third person was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Superintendent Goldsmith said the driver, a 91-year-old woman, was taken to hospital for assessment.

He said she was “terribly shaken” by the incident and would be interviewed by police later on Thursday.

“It is a downhill section of road so if there has been a lack of control to some degree, there is a possibility that the car would have picked up speed as it’s driven further down Coleman Road,” Superintendent Goldsmith said.

The driver was not seriously injured but has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating.
