An unaccompanied learner driver has shocked police after being clocked doing 200km/h in Cranbourne North early Sunday morning.

Casey Highway Patrol members were patrolling Thompsons Road when they sighted two vehicles allegedly racing each other about 1am

One of the vehicles, a blue Volkswagen Golf R, was detected travelling at exactly 200 km/h, more than twice the 80km/h speed limit.

The driver allegedly turned off his headlights and fled the scene.

Officers located the driver on a nearby street as he exited the vehicle.

The 18-year-old Clyde North man’s vehicle has been impounded for 30 days for $1138.10.

On top of that, he can expect to be charged on summons with numerous offences, including speeding, participating in unlawful street racing, being an unaccompanied learner and failing to drive with headlights at night.

Investigations remain ongoing.
