Man hit with charges following attempted armed robbery

MENTONE, VIC. — Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following an alleged attempted armed robbery in Mentone last night.

Police will allege that an altercation occurred after a 30-year-old man was sighted stealing from a charity bin on Florence Street just after 6pm.

A 75-year-old man confronted the 30-year-old, who allegedly armed himself with a cricket bat from the bin and assaulted the victim.

It is further alleged the 75-year-old man was threatened and demanded he hand over his phone by the 30-year-old before Good Samaritans restrained him.

The 75-year-old Mentone man sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.

The 30-year-old Mentone man was arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery, assault and affray.

He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
