SOUTH MELBOURNE, VIC. — Victoria Police has officially opened the new South Melbourne Police Station, marking an important milestone and ensuring officers are equipped with the facilities needed to meet the current and future needs of the community.
Located in the heart of South Melbourne at 142 Dorcas Street, the new station replaces the former Bank Street site, which had served the community since 1928.
While the former station was rich in history and character, the needs of both Victoria Police and the local community had outgrown the site, which was no longer fit for purpose.
The new South Melbourne Police Station will provide a modern, safe and secure base for police operations, allowing officers to continue delivering high-visibility policing and responding quickly to incidents across the area.
Officers based at the station will conduct round-the-clock patrols throughout South Melbourne, playing a critical role in preventing crime, responding to emergencies and holding offenders to account.
Members of the public can now access policing services from the new facility, which includes a public foyer, custody and interview areas, dedicated training spaces and undercover parking for police vehicles.
Construction on the new station commenced on March 28, 2025 and was completed on October 9, 2026.
Remaining works to external, non-operational areas are expected to be finalised by early December 2026. Public counter hours at the new station will be the same as they were at the old building – 7.30am to 2.30pm, Monday to Friday.
