RICHMOND, VIC. — Yarra Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after a tobacco store was attacked by arsonists in Richmond yesterday morning.

Neighbouring residents woke to loud bangs coming from the Bridge Road convenience store at about 3.30am, Detective Senior Constable Ruby Roberts stated.

“There is significant risk to the life and property of innocent parties due to these fires and the reckless nature of them,” she said.

After observing the entire business engulfed in flames, they managed to escape the building and notify emergency services.

There was no one inside the shop at the time. No injuries were reported.

“If people are aware of illicit activity linked to a tobacco store or other business near them, we need them to come forward with that information so police can act,” Detective Senior Constable Ruby Roberts said.

The business sustained significant damage during the blaze.

An arson chemist attended the scene to determine the cause of the fire, which is currently being treated as suspicious and targeted.
