The steaks are high for detectives after a man stole $5,000 worth of frozen food from a High Street, Berwick butcher about 2am.

Police have been told an unknown man forced entry into a cold storage room at the back of a butcher on High Street about 2am.

The man stole a number of boxes containing meat before fleeing the scene in a white Toyota Hilux utility ute.

Investigators believe the same driver is linked to an attempted ram raid at a general store in Beaconsfield Upper later the same night at about 1.30am.

Police believe the Toyota ute reversed into the store on Beaconsfield-Emerald Road and the driver used a chain attached to the vehicle to force open the doors.

He was seen entering the store and left empty-handed.

The man was wearing a camouflage jacket and a black balaclava.
