ST KILDA EAST, VIC. — Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) detectives have charged a 33-year-old Dandenong man following an alleged storage cage theft in St Kilda East yesterday.
Police allege two men broke into storage cages and looked into vehicles on Hotham Street just before 8am.
They allegedly stole a BMX bicycle and a tool kit from the premises.
Police responded and observed an allegedly stolen blue Volkswagen drive into Carlisle Avenue in Balaclava, where it came to the end of a dead-end street.
The car mounted the curb, then rammed the police vehicle as it fled.
There were no physical injuries.
The Volkswagen, which was allegedly stolen in Mambourin on 15 August, was found dumped on Vale Street in St Kilda a short time later.
The 33-year-old Dandenong man was arrested nearby.
He has been charged with burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, theft from a motor vehicle and possessing a drug of dependence.
The Dandenong man has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on March 3, 2027.
The other male offender remains outstanding.
The investigation is ongoing.
