TYCHO! Beyond the Baton is the remarkable story of Tommy Tycho, a Hungarian child prodigy who survived the Holocaust and rebuilt his life to become the pre-eminent musical director in Australia.

Produced by Inkwell Films in association with the Tommy Tycho Trust, the film reaffirms the genius of Tommy Tycho, the importance of his extensive archives as a source of rich, unpublished material, and the significance of his impact on the cultural landscape of Australia.

It was Tommy Tycho who gave Australia its current National Anthem arrangement – a version that has become embedded in the nation’s identity.

TYCHO! Beyond the Baton traces the extraordinary challenges Tommy overcame throughout his life.

From the devastating loss of his father at the age of nine, to surviving the terrifying conditions faced by Jews under the Nazi occupation of Budapest during World War II, Tommy’s resilience shaped both the man and the artist he would become.

Arriving in Australia in the early 1950s, Tommy encountered yet another obstacle when he was banned from working by the Australian Musicians’ Union.

Despite these setbacks, he rose to become one of Australia’s most respected and beloved musical figures, conducting orchestras, composing prolifically, and mentoring generations of performers.

Directed by Stephan Wellink (Pushing the Boundaries: The Mavis Bramston ShowThe Sculpture), the story unfolds through Tommy’s own narration, carefully curated from interviews recorded over many decades.

“During the development phase of TYCHO!, it became clear that Tommy had lived an extraordinary life outside of his professional work,” said director Stephan Wellink.

“Therefore, we decided to make a film that gave equal weight to Tommy’s important role in the history of Australian music and to the “unknown” Tommy; the Tommy beyond the baton.”

His reflections are complemented by authoritative commentary from Dr Samuel Cottell (foremost expert on Tommy Tycho) and Vicky Tycho (Tommy’s daughter), alongside insights from a range of distinguished musical artists mentored by Tommy throughout his career including Julie Anthony AM OBE, Barry Crocker AM, John Foreman AM, Kamahl AM, Todd McKenney, James Morrison AM, Jane Rutter and Simon Tedeschi AM.

The documentary’s underscore is drawn from Tommy’s original compositions, while a rich tapestry of rare photographs, archival audio recordings and historic film material vividly captures the texture of Tycho’s life, artistry and contribution to Australian culture.

More than a biography, TYCHO! Beyond the Baton is a story of survival, reinvention, mentorship and artistic excellence – a tribute to a man whose music helped shape modern Australia.

TYCHO! Beyond the Baton will screen at Cinema Nova as part of the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
