PRESTON, VIC. — The release of the developer’s proposed Preston Market Development Plan is an important milestone and an opportunity for residents, traders and visitors to help shape the future of one of Darebin’s most valued community spaces.
Preston Market has been at the heart of the Preston and surrounding community for generations. It’s much more than a place to shop. It’s a place where cultures are celebrated, local businesses thrive, and people come together.
The Market is deeply valued by our community, and we know its future matters to many people.
The Development Plan outlines the developer’s proposed vision for the Preston Market precinct, including the area surrounding the Market between Preston Station and the High Street shopping strip.
Darebin City Council has a long history of advocating alongside the community to protect Preston Market’s unique character, heritage and ongoing role as an important gathering place that supports fresh food, local business and community connection.
The Darebin community has been clear about what it values most about Preston Market and Council has worked hard over many years to ensure those views have informed planning protections for the site.
As Council reviews the Development Plan, we’ll be looking closely at whether those community priorities are reflected in the proposal. Our assessment will focus on key issues including the provision of open space, accommodating a growing population and protecting the Market’s heritage significance, distinctive character and role as a welcoming and vibrant destination.

Council will review the plans and prepare a submission to the State Government. Community feedback will also be an important part of the process.
Whether you’re a regular shopper, a trader, a nearby resident or someone who simply loves what the Market brings to our community, now is the time to get informed and have your say.
Community members can review the plans and provide feedback directly to the Victorian Government through the Engage Victoria website until Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
The future of the Preston Market precinct should be shaped by the people who know it, love it and rely on it every day.
If you would like your views to be considered as part of the State Government’s decision-making process, make sure you submit your feedback before consultation closes on October 14, 2026.
