FITZROY, VIC. — Yarra City Council marked a major milestone in the Brunswick Street Oval redevelopment, welcoming Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence to Edinburgh Gardens this week to turn the first sod on the construction of the precinct’s new tennis courts.
This marks the start of construction on a project that has been in development for almost a decade. Made possible by an investment of $12.8 million from the Victorian Government via the Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.
The facility will be a game-changer for local sport and community life, giving future generations more opportunities to play and take part in community sport.
The redevelopment includes:
- two new tennis courts;
- a full upgrade of the six existing courts;
- new, accessible facilities and an adjoining social and community room and
- an upgraded and accessible sports pavilion.
Yarra City Council Deputy Mayor, Cr Dr Sharon Harrison, said this was an important step in creating more opportunities for kids and young people to get active.
“This redevelopment meets the needs of a fast-growing community and creates a welcoming home for local sport.
“The community tennis club has a three-year waiting list for members, and the Fitzroy Football and Junior Football Clubs, as well as the Edinburgh Cricket Club, are always in demand,” she said.
“It’s exciting to see this project take shape and I can’t wait to see the local community enjoying this new precinct for years to come.”
The Brunswick Street Oval redevelopment is possible with support from the Victorian Government, the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund and the Australian Football League (AFL).
