Police have charged a 20-year-old Sale man after a school crossing assistant was allegedly assaulted in Sale about 3.30pm yesterday.

It is believed the victim was assaulted, in an alleged unprovoked attack, by the man on York Street about 3.30pm.

Investigators were told that the victim had asked the man to move as he was standing too close when it is alleged the man struck the victim to the left side of her face, the impact causing the victim to fall to the ground and hit her head.

The victim, a 69-year-old Sale woman, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A Sale man handed himself in to the police late yesterday.

The 20-year-old man has been charged with recklessly causing injury and unlawful assault. He was bailed to appear before Sale Magistrates’ Court on September 12.
