Busted cashing stolen cheques

BALLARAT, VIC. — Ballarat Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following a series of deceptions totalling over $30,000 in the Ballarat area.

BALLARAT, VIC. — Ballarat Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following a series of deceptions totalling over $30,000 in the Ballarat area.

Detectives will allege that a commercial business in Ballarat was burgled on May 12 and a chequebook was stolen.

Three of those cheques were allegedly cashed between May 13 and 15, and the man attempted to cash a fourth cheque at banks in the Ballarat area.

A second commercial business in Ballarat was burgled on May 23. Another chequebook belonging to a different victim was taken.

Two of those cheques were cashed on Saturday, July 4 at banks in the Ballarat area.

Detectives executed a search warrant at a Napier Street address in Creswick yesterday, July 15 and arrested a 47-year-old man in relation to the offending.

He has been charged with obtaining property by deception, handling stolen goods and committing an indictable offence whilst on bail.

He has been bailed to appear at the Ballarat Magistrates’ Court on November 23.
