Detectives are investigating after Captain Cook’s cottage and statue was damaged in Melbourne at about 2am.

It is believed two offenders attended the cottage in Fitzroy Gardens and spray painted the hut.

The cottage has been defaced with what appear to be various anti-Cook comments.

The Captain Cook statue, which also stands in the gardens, has been damaged by what appears to be an attempt to remove Captain Cook’s head.

Police were alerted to the criminal damage by security patrols.

Detectives have secured nearby CCTV in an attempt to identify those involved.
