Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a fatal collision in South Morang at about 9:30am.

Police believe a female driver was travelling along Gorge Road, South Morang when she collided with a truck.

The impact of the collision caused the car to burst into flames.

Emergency workers tried to save the woman. Sadly she died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the truck, a 40-year-old Epping man, was arrested at the scene. He is currently being interviewed.

A section of Gorge Road and Kurrak Road between Riverside Drive, South Morang and Yan Yean Road, Yarrambat remains closed to traffic.

Drivers will need to allow up to 15 minutes extra and detour via Plenty Rd, Bridge Inn Road and Yan Yean Rd; or Plenty Rd, the M80 Ring Road, Greensborough Bypass and Yan Yean Rd.

Route 901 Frankston to Melbourne Airport smart buses will divert around the road closure and miss stops from the Briar Court and George Rd bus stop off Gorge Road to McLaughlans Lane and Diamond Creek Road.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined.

Investigations remain ongoing.
