Police were patrolling Collins Street when a member of the public advised patrol officers a person had been shot at about 6.30am.

Armed Crime Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding a shooting in Collins Street, Melbourne, this morning.

Police were patrolling Collins Street when a member of the public advised patrol officers a person had been shot at about 6.30am.

A dark-coloured Ford Territory drove towards the officers on Collins Street before one officer drew his firearm.

The vehicle fled the scene.

Police were then approached by the victim, who had sustained a gunshot wound.

The 20-year-old Smythes Creek man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The offenders remain outstanding. Investigations remain ongoing.

Police believe the people involved are known to each other.
