AIRPORT WEST, VIC. — Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) firefighters and police investigators remain on the scene of a factory fire in Airport West.

Firefighters were called to Prestige Autoworks at 52 King Street, Airport West at 1.07am after several callers to Triple Zero (000) reported hearing explosions.

Firefighters arrived on scene within seven minutes to find a brick factory, approximately 40 by 40 metres, fully involved, with flames spreading through the roof, so the response was escalated to a third alarm.

Because of the structural collapse, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus had to conduct a defensive attack.

After about two and a half hours battling the blaze, the incident was deemed under control at 3.25am. At the height of the incident, more than 50 firefighters and 15 appliances, including a hoselayer and three aerial appliances, were on scene.

Paramedics were called to the scene, but there were no reports of injuries.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said no one was believed to have been inside the auto workshop when the fire began.

They said the cause was still being investigated, but it was being treated as suspicious.

“Due to structural damage, investigations at the scene will continue when it is safe to do so,” a police spokesperson said.

A community warning was issued for smoke in the surrounding area and remains in place.
