GREENSBOROUGH, VIC. — Detectives from the Homicide Squad this morning have charged a man as part of their investigation into the 1991 death of Melinda Freeman in Whittlesea.

A 63-year-old Greensborough man was arrested in Greensborough at dawn this morning and subsequently interviewed by police.

He has been charged with murder, is currently being held at the Greensborough Police Station and will be transported to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later today.

Police will allege in court that the parties are known to each other.

Today’s arrest follows an incident on October 4, 1991, where Melinda was found dead about 11.30pm inside her Yea Road, Whittlesea home.

The then 27-year-old had been fatally assaulted.

Melinda was located in the upstairs hallway of the Whittlesea home she shared with her husband and infant son.

Earlier that day, Melinda and her husband had been at a family reunion to welcome her sister back from overseas.

The couple arrived home from the function about 4pm and Melinda then prepared dinner for the family.

Later her husband and child left the house, so Melinda could be left alone to study for her proposed career in the beauty industry.

About 11.30pm that night, her husband returned home and unlocked the back door before noticing the premises appeared to have been ransacked.

It was at this time that he also noticed that the front door of the house was open.

Melinda’s husband then walked to the bottom of the stairs and from there, he saw Melinda’s body lying on the top-storey landing.

At the time Detective Inspector Thomas also acknowledged that the ransacking of the house and apparent burglary on the night of Ms Freeman’s murder may have been staged.

The husband remained a person of interest to homicide detectives.
Police have not disclosed if the man arrested today was her former husband.
