It is a common practice for both prison inmates and those visiting inmates to hide contraband within fruit.
Liberal Party candidate for the seat of Goldstein, Tim Wilson, “delivered fruit” to Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) officials conducting a recount for the Federal seat of Goldstein, where it is a ‘run-off’ between Mr Wilson and independent candidate Zoe Daniels.
VicNews contacted the AEC seeking a response. When we told them what we thought, they were stunned, so we provided them with a crude demonstration of how easy this is.
The AEC confirmed that “none of the fruit” was checked, as prison guards do regularly, knowing all about ‘forbidden fruit’.

Without clarification of what was contained within ‘the fruit’ Mr Wilson delivered, then, for reasons of democratic principles, the seat of Goldstein should now be recalled and a full and thorough by-election held.
If inmates can get cocaine, or a few $100 notes, into our prisons “bearing fruit”, then one must ask what Tim Wilson was doing “delivering fruit” when he knows full well this is against electoral law?
Serious questions must now be asked.
If the fruit Tim Wilson delivered was not ‘cut open’ and inspected by AEC officials, then a full by-election should now be under serious consideration.
The AEC confirmed that the fruit Tim Wilson delivered to AEC officials conducting the recount was not cut open or inspected. Therefore, “the fruit” may have contained contraband within.
The Australian Electoral Commission was contacted and is investigating.
Tim Wilson has not responded to requests for comment.
