Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after a serious collision involving a stolen vehicle in Tarneit on Sunday, May 18.

Emergency services were called to reports that a Haval Jolion SUV collided with a Toyota Camry before crashing into a pole at the intersection of Dohertys and Derrimut Road about 1.25am.

Two 16-year-old male occupants from the Haval were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Acting Sergeant Melanie MacFarlane from the Major Collision Investigation Unit described the crash as “extremely serious”.

“The scene was chaotic and catastrophic. The damage to the vehicle was extreme,” she said.

“They’re fighting for their lives in hospital. They’ve got really serious injuries that were completely and entirely preventable.”

She said it was “lucky” no-one in the other vehicle was injured.

“They’re extremely lucky. They were fortunate enough not to have any injuries as a result of this collision and managed to walk away from what could have been an absolutely disastrous day for everybody,” she said.

“The boys’ injuries … are so severe they are not under police guard,” Acting Sergeant Melanie MacFarlane told Mary McDonald on ABC (Radio) News, Melbourne.

A third 16-year-old male occupant was also transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fortunately, the occupants of the Toyota did not sustain any serious injuries.

Checks revealed the Haval was stolen from a shopping centre carpark on Hummingbird Boulevard, Tarneit, on Saturday, May 10.

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
