A 23-year-old man has had his car impounded after being allegedly caught speeding at 193km/h in a 100km/h zone in Tullamarine on Christmas Eve.

Fawkner Highway Patrol officers patrolled as part of Operation Roadwise when they detected a Holden Commodore sedan travelling on the Western Ring Road at about 11:15pm.

Police will allege the Commodore was travelling in a 100 km/h zone towards Melbourne Airport, but was recorded by police at 193km/h.

Officers intercepted the vehicle on Airport Drive and spoke to the probationary licenced driver.

The Commodore was impounded for 30 days for $1014.90.

The driver is expected to be charged with exceeding speed by over 45km/h and driving at a dangerous speed.
