A major building fire in Nunawading last night caused police to evacuate 25 to 30 people from nearby properties.

At 2:21am, firefighters arrived to find a Forty Winks store at 317 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading, on fire and emitting smoke. They escalated the response to a second-alarm fire.

The store has been destroyed by fire.

Aerial fire trucks, including telebooms, were called to assist in the firefighting as the fire began to spread to nearby buildings.

Approximately 95 firefighters fought the fire with 26 fire trucks attending.

The fire was declared under control at 6:28am today.

The fire has been deemed suspicious. Victoria Police Arson Squad is investigating.

Crews will remain on scene for the remainder of Sunday, Fire Rescue Victoria said.
