Firefighters are currently fighting a fire on Whiteman Street, Southbank.

Clarendon Street is closed in both directions. A smoke warning has been issued for the Melbourne CBD and surrounding areas.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building involving two small factories to begin an internal attack on the fire.

Five pumpers, a rescue and a ‘teleboom’ attended the scene.

Commander Mitch Simons is in charge of the scene. Police and Ambulance Victoria are also in attendance.

Tram route 12 has been impacted with trams diverting via light rail along Route 96 between Stop 124A Casino/MCEC & St Kilda/Fitzroy Street.

The fire is considered suspicious. The factories were disused and frequented by squatters.

More to come.
