AUSTRALIA. — Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor leads the cast in Golden Boy, a searing revival of Clifford Odets’ knockout American classic.

Golden Boy is a drama about the meteoric rise of an ambitious cop who becomes the youngest police commissioner in the history of New York City, and the high personal and professional cost he pays to achieve it.

As he’s interviewed for a story about his career, Walter William Clark, Jr. (Theo James) flashes back to his hard-fought journey from street kid to the most powerful man in law enforcement.

First staged in 1937, Clifford Odets’ Golden Boy is set in Depression-era New York.

Joe Bonaparte is a gifted violinist drawn towards professional boxing by the promise of money and fame. The play examines the conflict between artistic fulfilment and the personal cost of pursuing success. His musical vocation and the opportunities offered by the ring point towards competing futures, with the drama centred on what he may sacrifice in choosing between them.

Filmed live at the Almeida Theatre in London to sold-out audiences, Golden Boy will screen in Australian cinemas from November 19 and is distributed by Sharmill Films.
