LOVELY BANKS, VIC. — Geelong Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) detectives are investigating the death of a beloved pet horse, Dane, who was last seen alive in a paddock at a property off Anakie Road, Lovely Banks, at about 7pm on Wednesday, September 16.

The following day, the 27-year-old equine was located collapsed in the field after sustaining what is believed to be a gunshot wound at about 8am.

His devastated owner, a 28-year-old Corio woman, reported her pet’s death to police.

“This is a deeply upsetting incident for the horse’s owner, who is understandably devastated by the loss of a beloved pet,” Geelong CIU Senior Constable Matthew Brock said.

“We are still working to determine exactly what occurred – we are not sure at this stage whether someone deliberately killed this horse or whether it was accidentally shot by hunters in the area.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual in the area, no matter how insignificant they think that information may seem,” S/C Brock said.
