CARDIGAN, VIC. — A 42-year-old woman has died in hospital after she was found critically injured on Remembrance Drive, Cardigan, following reports that a passerby had located the woman at about 2.10am today.

The 42-year-old woman from the local area was airlifted to hospital, where she later died.

At this early stage, police believe the woman may have been lying on the road and been struck by a truck or other vehicle, and the driver may not be aware.

Officers at the scene have located debris consistent with a truck possibly being involved.

Ballarat police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing for motorists who drove through the area in the early hours of the morning to come forward.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
