Charges following Spotswood factory fire

SPOTSWOOD, VIC. — Detectives today charged a 32-year-old man following a fire in Spotswood in May.

Emergency services were called to reports of a factory fire on Hudsons Road just after 2.30am on May 26.

There were no injuries; however, numerous people from neighbouring premises were evacuated as a precaution.

The building sustained significant damage during the blaze.

This morning, detectives served charges on the 32-year-old man in relation to the fire, including.

  • criminal damage by fire (arson);
  • reckless conduct, endangering life;
  • committing an indictable offence whilst on bail;
  • contravening a condition of bail and
  • driving whilst disqualified.

Further charges were also laid in relation to an incident where shots were allegedly fired into an Altona North business on May 12.

The new charges include:

  • two counts of possessing a firearm when a Firearm Prohibition Order (FPO) applies;
  • possessing a traffickable quantity of firearms (2 or more);
  • reckless conduct endangering life;
  • possessing a drug of dependence;
  • going equipped to steal and
  • handling stolen goods.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on October 16.
