MOUNT WAVERLEY, VIC. — Monash Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a 52-year-old Mount Waverley man with a total of nine offences after he allegedly used fake names and businesses to reply to Airtasker advertisements for various building-related works and scammed five victims in fraud-related incidents over the past 20 months.
Police will allege he scammed the victims by agreeing to carry out work, taking payments and then not completing the work or offering refunds.
The alleged offending occurred between July 2025 and August 2026 and left the victims out of pocket a combined amount of approximately $20,000.
One of the victims transferred a total of $5800 to the man for works he never showed up to complete. He was allegedly promised refunds before the man stopped replying to correspondence.
Detectives arrested the Mount Waverley man last Friday, September 25.
He has been charged with obtaining property by deception, using fraudulent documents and committing an indictable offence on bail.
He was remanded in custody to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday, October 9.
