ABBOTSFORD, VIC. — Yarra Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) detectives seized firearms and an imitation explosive device from a property in Abbotsford on Tuesday.

Police executed the search warrant at the address on Gipps Street as part of an investigation about 8.15am.

They seized firearms, firearm parts and ammunition, and a man and woman were arrested.

The search was paused as the Bomb Response Unit attended after suspected explosive devices were found.

After the premises were evacuated, the items were safely disposed of and deemed to be imitation explosive devices.

Once the area was deemed safe, police continued to search the property at about 3pm.

They also located a firearm, cash and drugs inside a safe.

A 35-year-old Abbotsford man was charged with:

    • trafficking firearms;
    • for counts (of being a) prohibited person possessing a firearm;
    • possessing unregistered handguns;
    • possessing ammunition;
    • two counts of possessing a prohibited weapon;
    • three counts of possessing an imitation firearm;
    • theft of a motor vehicle and
    • possessing drugs of dependence;

He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

A 30-year-old Abbotsford woman was released and is expected to be charged on summons later.
