Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to several triple-zero calls of a unit on fire on Cooma Street, Preston at 11:11pm.

Firefighters arrived on the scene within six minutes to find a fire on the top floor of a three-storey brick apartment building.

Occupants from the 31 apartments were evacuated safely.

Firefighters aggressively fought the fire and were able to prevent it from spreading to neighbouring apartments.

In total, 30 firefighters and 10 appliances responded to the blaze.

Damage to the unit is extensive and smoke logging occurred to other apartments on the top floor.

One female sustained burns and was transported to hospital.

The fire was deemed ‘under control’ within 40 minutes.

Police coordinated the temporary rehousing of all residents.

FRV Specialist Fire Investigators are attending this morning to determine the cause.
