NILLUMBIK SHIRE COUNCIL, VIC. — Nillumbik residents are being asked to keep dogs on leashes and adhere to detour signage at local reserves as the council’s Rabbit Control Program commences.
Wild rabbits are an environmental pest and are prevalent throughout the Shire, causing a major threat to biodiversity and agricultural production.
Nillumbik Council uses a non-chemical, non-poison approach by employing a specialist contractor who employs ferreting, netting, and warren-closure techniques.
The program runs from June to August at bushland reserves across Nillumbik. Reserves are selected based on factors including public usage, protection of biodiversity assets, rabbit numbers and prior investment in rabbit control. Council also selects reserves where it can achieve a coordinated approach with large adjoining areas owned privately or by other public land managers.
