FYANSFORD, VIC. — Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged four men following an alleged copper theft at a recycling plant in Fyansford on Wednesday.

Police were on patrol along Hamilton Highway when they were flagged down by workers at the site and told copper was allegedly being stolen by four unknown males about 3.20am.

As officers moved in to arrest the men, it is alleged they entered a stolen Toyota Prado and collided with a police vehicle while attempting to flee.

Officers arrested a 33-year-old Craigieburn man, a 49-year-old Sunshine West man, as well as a 39-year-old man and 40-year-old man from Albanvale.

The 33-year-old was charged with two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, theft, going equipped to steal, committing an indictable offence whilst on bail, possession of methylamphetamine and possessing a drug of dependence.

He appeared before the Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The remaining three men were each charged with offences including two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, theft and going equipped to steal.

They were bailed to appear before Geelong Magistrates’ Court on October 13.
