SAN REMO, VIC. —Police and emergency services rescued a 50-year-old man after he had fallen and become trapped down a rock crevice off George Bass Coastal Walk about 2.10pm yesterday.
General duties (patrol) police officers responded and were able to communicate with the man but were unable to gain access to him due to the difficult terrain and rising tide.
Officers from the Search and Rescue Squad winched down the approximately 30-metre crevice and assessed the man, who reported he had broken his leg.
The Rescue and Coordination Centre (RCC) coordinated the response, which included Fire Rescue Victoria, Country Fire Authority, State Emergency Service (SES), Air Wing, Search and Rescue Squad, Ambulance Victoria (HEMS), Life Saving Victoria and Water Police personnel.
Following an extensive and technical rescue operation, the man was winched to safety by Ambulance Victoria (HEMS) around 5.30pm and airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
