Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident in Traralgon overnight where a man became unresponsive following his arrest and subsequently died.
Shortly after being taken into custody, the man became non-responsive.
Despite the best efforts of emergency services to revive the man, he died at the scene.
The exact circumstances surrounding the man’s death are yet to be determined.
ABC News Gippsland spoke to neighbours of the man who said he was known for his erratic behaviour.
Local man Gino Tripodi told ABC News his heart was racing when he got home in the early hours of Sunday morning and saw the incident unfolding.
“I had to be okayed to walk home, so I didn’t know where I was going to sleep if I couldn’t walk through,” Mr Tripodi told ABC News.
Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the incident with oversight from the Professional Standards Command, as per standard practice, where someone dies after being taken into police custody.
