Liberal Party promise $1.14m in grants for regional mental health outreach services

Young people in Murrindindi Shire will be able to access mental health support easier and closer to home if a Liberal (State) Government is elected this November.

Member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish announced the Liberals will provide $1.14 million in grants over four years for headspace to provide outreach services to communities in regional Victoria if elected.

“headspace [National Youth Mental Health Foundation] is a critical support network for Victorians aged 12 to 25 to come and talk about what they’re going through and these grants will mean we can provide more opportunities to do this out in the community.

“This will be [a] game changer for youth mental health in Murrindindi,” McLeish said.

A lack of public transport makes it hard for young people in Murrindindi Shire to get to the nearest headspace centres in Shepparton, Greensborough and Knox.

“It’s even more difficult for those who don’t drive or have a family member who can take them,” McLeish said.

Programs to be funded could include social events for young people or regular outreach services in communities.

“These grants will make sure young Victorians have access to headspace’s important mental health services – regardless of where they live.

“I’m proud to be part of a Liberal Nationals Government that will put the health of our young people first, boosting support by funding much-needed headspace outreach services across the state,” McLeish said.

One in four young people have experienced a mental health issue in the past 12 months – a higher prevalence than all other age groups.

Outreach services have been successfully established in other states, including in New South Wales and Queensland.

The National Youth Mental Health Foundation is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health.
