Detectives are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision in Laverton North at about 10:10pm at the intersection of Dohertys and Fitzgerald roads.
Emergency services responded to reports of a three-vehicle collision involving a black Ford Ranger ute travelling eastbound on Fitzgerald Road collided with a silver Mitsubishi travelling south on Dohertys Road.
The Ford collided with a traffic signal pole and a stationary grey Volkswagen.
“One of those cars was travelling at a significant speed,” a detective told ABC Radio Melbourne.
A rear passenger from the Ford, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
A front-seat passenger from the Ford was uninjured.
The driver of the Ford was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The drivers and sole occupants of the Mitsubishi and the Volkswagen were uninjured.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing. and police are expected to be present throughout Friday.
The intersection of Dohertys Road and Fitzgerald Road is closed.
