This morning Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded at 10.08am to reports of a fire near Bay Trail and Westgate Car Park, Port Melbourne after several triple zero callers reported a grass and scrub fire.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find a grass and scrub fire about 50 metres by 50 metres burning with multiple trees on fire.

The response was quickly escalated as additional appliances (fire trucks and firefighters) were requested with multiple seats of fire moving in a south-westerly direction and limited water supply in the area.

FRV and CFA crews are currently working to contain three seats of fire, both north and south of the West Gate Freeway. This includes waterbombing from firefighting helicopters. As such, some commercial flights may be delayed.

A community warning has been issued for smoke across the Westgate Bridge.

The scene is now under control.

Ambulance Victoria, DEECA and Victoria Police are also on scene.

DEECA has taken command of the fire this afternoon.

Forest Fire Management Victoria last advised at 4.45pm Melbourne time, that smoke may still be visible from nearby communities and local roads.

More to come.
