Officers called in the Air Wing which picked up the vehicle in Camp Road where it was detected travelling 190km/h in a 60km/h zone.

The vehicle travelled through Campbellfield, Craigieburn, Greenvale and Meadow Heights before one of the occupants threw what appeared to be a bag from the window in Kyabram Street, Broadmeadows.

The Air Wing continued to follow the car as police on the ground found the bag which contained a loaded firearm.

The five occupants abandoned the BMW in Railway Crescent, Dallas where they rendezvoused with another vehicle.

Air Wing officers continued to watch the Hyundai 130, which was seen slowing in the vicinity of Cuthbert Street. Three passengers were let out of the vehicle.

Police on the ground moved in and arrested the trio while the Air Wing continued to follow the Hyundai.

Officers deployed stop sticks at the intersection of Blair and Belfast streets and the car came to a complete stop.

Two males and a female surrendered and were arrested.

A search of the dumped BMW, which was stolen during an aggravated burglary in Cheltenham, uncovered a loaded homemade firearm.

The five men and one woman, ranging in age from 19 to 21, will be interviewed by police today.
