Mernda Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) investigators have arrested a man following an incident at the Austin Hospital in Heidelberg.

It is alleged that a recording device in the form of a mobile phone was located in a restricted staff toilet of the Austin Hospital, Heidelberg toilet on Thursday, July 3.

“The device is believed to have been in place for some time before staff became aware and reported the matter,” a police spokeswoman said.

Austin Health chief executive Jodie Geissler notified staff of the arrest through a hospital-wide email obtained by ABC News Melbourne.

“In recent days, we have become aware of some suspicious activity that has warranted a report to Victoria Police,” Ms Geissler told staff in the email.

“We have prioritised engaging with staff who, based on the current information, work in the potentially impacted areas of the hospital.

“We acknowledge the situation and the limited information we can share creates uncertainty and you probably have many questions. We commit to providing more information as soon as we can.”

As a result, police executed a warrant at the address of a junior doctor in Heidelberg West this morning, Thursday, July 10.

The junior doctor, a 27-year-old Heidelberg West man and a trainee surgeon, has been charged with stalking and using an optical surveillance device.

He was bailed to appear at Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Friday, August 29.

This report was updated at 4pm AEST (10/7/25) with new information, whereby after being interviewed by police, he has now being charged.
