Man arrested following Fitzroy pursuit

A 43-year-old man is in custody following a crash in an allegedly stolen vehicle in Fitzroy North about 1.30am.

The police helicopter spotted a grey BMW wagon travelling at high speeds in Southbank with the vehicle allegedly driving approximately 120km/h in a 40km/h zone and failing to stop at red traffic lights in Richmond.

Highway patrol officers attempted to intercept the BMW on Nicholson Street, Fitzroy North. The car didn’t stop.

Police on the ground called off the pursuit and the air wing continued following the car before the wagon crashed into a coffee shop at the intersection of Nicholson Street and Miller Street.

The 43-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested and taken to hospital for observation under police guard.

He is expected to be charged with theft of a motor vehicle and multiple driving, drug and weapon offences.

The BMW is believed to have been stolen in Highett on June 8.
