CLAYTON, VIC. — A Melbourne family has safely evacuated after being alerted to a fire by a working smoke alarm.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) was called to Kionga Street, Clayton, around 3pm yesterday after several callers to Triple Zero (000) reported black smoke billowing from a home.

Firefighters arrived on the scene within five minutes to find the upper level of a house on fire.

Thankfully, six occupants and their pets safely evacuated the property before firefighters arrived, after being alerted to the blaze by a working smoke alarm.

The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

The blaze caused extensive damage to the upper floor, with the remainder of the property suffering significant smoke and water damage.

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause.
