MELBOURNE, VIC. — On Wednesday, August 26, a Sunshine West man, 27-year-old Jerry Sowood, was charged with several offences, including intentionally causing injury and conduct endangering life.
All of Victoria saw what occurred when Sowood allegedly assaulted a mother and her young children who were in Melbourne from Phillip Island for her 10-year-old son’s three-monthly scan for what she described as an extremely rare, inoperable brain tumour.
Whilst Sowood was remanded in custody to reappear in November, his lawyer will be going through social media, printing out every racist comment about the matter, ready for court. Every single racist post online is only helping Sowood obtain a lighter sentence, among other matters.
First of all, if a jury trial is ordered, Sowood’s lawyer can present all the racist posts and argue before Your Honour that there is no hope of finding an untainted jury due to racist online posts. An argument Your Honour will take into consideration.
Then, if found guilty, all the racists will wonder why Your Honour gives Sowood a lighter sentence. That’s simple. Every online racist post Sowood’s lawyer can find, he will present at the sentencing hearing as ‘having already been judged in the public’ and ‘publicly sentenced’ (like a lynch mob with pitchforks); Your Honour will have to give some ‘legal weight’ to every one of those racist posts.
A possible sentencing outcome could be that for each racist post, Your Honour reduces the sentence by a day, a week, a month, etc.
So if these racists want ‘immigrants’ who ‘commit crimes’ to receive the maximum penalty possible, then they are the ones who need to shut the fuck up and post nothing about it online.
Let the justice system do its job.
Racist posts only help the alleged offender receive a lighter sentence if found guilty.
