Bundoora Park defeats Lakers by 141 runs

Round 13 of the North Metro Cricket Association (NMCA) was played over Saturday February 10 and 17. The Sault Shield game was contested between Kinglake’s First XI and Bundoora Park’s Third XI at Kinglake Memorial Oval.

Bundoora Park needed an outright win for the possibility of playing finals, just three weeks away.

On Saturday, February 10, Kinglake won the toss and elected to bat first. After 32.5 overs of accurate bowling Bundoora had dismissed Kinglake for just 89 runs.

Alex Hybinett 0, James Edwards 10, Jason Gaffee 44, Simon Andrews 8, James Gibbs 0, Nick Stella 10, Ken Aitken 1, Lachlan Martin 1, Declan Walters 2*, Josh Green 0 and Keith Martin 0, with 13 extras.

Bundoora Park then faced 37 overs which they used to good effect and at stumps on day one were 3/209 giving them a 120 run lead at stumps.

On Saturday, February 17 Bundoora continued their innings for 16 overs slapped the ball to all parts of the ground before declaring at 4/ 317 setting Kinglake a target of 228 from 54 overs to make them bat again, an unlikely prospect this season.

It was the fifteenth over before Kinglake wicket-keeper Alex Hybinett lost his wicket, bowled by D. Hallyburton for three runs having faced 41 balls in partnership with James Edwards that produced just eight runs.

Edwards was the next to go, 10 runs from 62 balls. two for 23 in the twenty first over.

Jason Gaffee and Simon Andrews then helped the total to grow to 63 before Jason was caught in the fortieth  over for 36 runs from 66 balls faced. Simon was a rock standing against the storm of bowlers and had partners in James Gibbs (3 from 18 balls) Nick Stella (2 from 9) and Ken Aitken (1* from 9).

At stumps Simon remained 16*, having faced 118 balls from Bundoora Park’s eight bowlers.

On Saturday, February 24 and Saturday, March 3 the Kinglake First XI play Holy Trinity’s Third XI in a two day away game for Round 14, the last home and away match for season 2017-18, which will conclude the Lakers’ 2017-18 cricket season.
