AFL Yarra Ranges Community Championship wrap

Yea’s Daniel O’Dwyer was best on ground in the Under 19 football as AFL Yarra Ranges representative football and netball teams travelled to Beaconsfield last Saturday, May 19, to play the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) in senior, Under 19’s football and netball open and Under 17’s competitions.

In footy AFL Yarra Ranges had no success. On the netball court the Under 17’s were defeated whilst the open team triumphed.

In senior football both sides came out full of run but South East got the jump on the Yarra Ranges before making a late first quarter comeback. At quarter time the SEFNL were 5.2 (32) to Yarra Ranges 4.5 (29).

Yarra Ranges should have been in front but were wayward with kicking. South East turned the screws in the second quarter holding Yarra Ranges to just one goal one behind  5.6 (36), while they increased their lead to 18 points at half time kicking three goals, four behinds 8.6 (54).

Yarra Ranges were still in the game but needed to regroup.  They came out with more run in the 3rd, but South East again got the early jump and kicked five goals one 13.7 (85).  Even though Yarra Ranges kicked three goals and three behinds 8.9 (75) it would take a big effort to get the job done in the final quarter.

The AFL Yarra Ranges team never gave up but wayward kicking saw the South East FNL win by 36.

Whilst the final score wasn’t flattering for the Yarra Ranges the game was played at a high standard in good spirit by both teams.
