On January 17, 1949, the first Volkswagen (VW) Type 1 arrived on American shores. If you’re not a VW obsessive, you might know the Type 1 by its other name—the Beetle.

The Beetle was a masterpiece of innovation and economics—it was compact, but practical, and inexpensive to buy and maintain.

The car’s curved exterior not only gave it a groundbreaking look, but was aerodynamic, too.

Rear-wheel drive with a rear-mounted engine and small stature gave the Beetle excellent handling, particularly compared to American vehicles of its day.

The innovative air-cooled engine required less maintenance and was easy to fix.
