MORNINGTON PENINSULA SHIRE, VIC. — Mornington Peninsula Shire Council CEO Mark Stoermer has spoken out about public concerns regarding parking infringements around school drop-offs and on nature strips within narrow streets.
Mornington Peninsula Shire admitted it was fining residents for “trying to do the right thing” – and has vowed to find a fairer solution to its nature strip parking dilemma.
“While safety needs to remain our priority – some residents who have been affected are rightly fed up. We do have a problem that I’m committed to fixing,” Mr Stoermer said.
“While our contractors are enforcing Victorian road rules, the way those rules are being applied is not always producing fair or sensible outcomes.
“In many of these cases though, they’re responding to community complaints in relation to safety issues.
“We agree, in certain instances, that people should not be fined for trying to do the right thing – particularly in narrow streets where parking entirely on the road may obstruct traffic or stuck in traffic around busy school pick-ups,” Mr Stoermer said.
